Delusion Analysis
Narrative Structure:
Beginning - We see an old man visiting a grave at a cemetery, the audience are unaware of who this person is at this stage. We are first introduced to him when he gets out of his car and walks to the grave, our first impressions of his are that he is quite harmless. After becoming angered, throwing the rose to the floor and walking away, we see a masked man standing over the grave that he was just at. We see the hooded man, however when Eric turns to see him, the mysterious man had gone. This suggests that either the man had suddenly hidden himself, or that the man does not exist and had disappeared.
The next scene is of the old man returning home in the evening. It shows him to enter his room and look at a photograph, which has now been made clear to the audience that the woman in the photograph is the person who he went to see at the graveyard earlier that day.
There is a key shot of Eric in the mirror, it shows one side of the mirror to show Eric looking downwards at the photo and the other mirror in the shot shows Eric with a faceless mask. This now reveals to the audience that the masked man from the graveyard is actually Eric, which also indicates that Eric has a split personality.
The end scene is of the killing of Eric’s daughter, it shows the masked man (Eric) to take a knife from her kitchen and go up to her bedroom. Our opening sequence ends as Eric swings the door open, this is to indicate that something bad is going to his daughter and further reveals that Eric is the one that killed his daughter.
Codes & Conventions of thrillers:
Our film consists of many codes and conventions of thriller films, such as concealment. As the killer’s identity is hidden from the audience as he wears a faceless mask and also wears a hood. The question and answer model I used, as the audience are presented with several questions, such as ‘Who is the hooded man?’, ‘Is the hooded man a real person?’ and ‘Why is he killing those people?’.
Our sequence also includes partial vision, as the killing of his daughter, which has happened in the past appears as a flashback. Transformed City is used as a seemingly safe house, is ‘transforms’ into a murder scene. And finally protraction is used, as the locations change from the cemetery to the house, and from that house to another.
Camerawork:
Our film includes a vast array of different and diverse camera angles, as of the tracking shots in the bedroom, the long shot at the cemetery, the close-ups of the knife. All these shots help towards building the tension, whilst giving the audience a clear view of the storyline.
Mise-en-scene:
The beginning of our opening sequence is quite sad, several significations of death are used as of the cemetery, the rose that signifies the love he has now lost and the photograph which shows who he has lost. Also the weather is a symbol of loss and sadness as it is all quite overcast.
Sound:
Non-diegetic and diegetic sounds are used throughout our thriller film. Non-diegetic is used as of the music that plays, gradually gaining tension to build suspence and entice the audience. Other non-diegatic sounds are included as of the sound effect of the knife being taken from the kitchen.
Diegetic sounds are heard as of the birds at the cemetery, also the sounds of Eric as he enters his home.
Editing:
The beginning of the film at the cemetery includes quite slow cuts, this represents the calmness of the graveyard and lack of threat there is. However as the opening sequence continues, the editing becomes much more faster to build the tension and interest of the audience.
Graphics:
The graphics used in our film are super-imposed, with a quite un-nerving typeface and are red. The red is a symbol of blood and danger, however is also a symbol of love, in this case maybe of the love in which Eric is destroying. The roles of the people are spread out throughout the footage and often placed in dark areas of the screen, this offers great contrast so the vibrant red can be seen more clearly.
The title of our film ‘Dillusion’ is at the end our sequence, it is centered and grows bigger. The typeface is the same as used for the other credits and uses the colours red on black, this again uses the contrast to show the name clearly.
